Statement of Challenge
NASA currently sponsors a large number of projects that acquire and utilize high-resolution datasets such as Landsat and ASTER. Other agencies and organizations also sponsor a significant number of projects that use these data, some having quite large holdings. Although the data from NASA’s distributed archives can be shared, searching the existing data archives for needed scenes can be challenging. Frequently, those holding collections of data would welcome more extensive utilization of their collections, as well as the ability to obtain data from others. Some of the larger collections, such as those at Landsat.org (Michigan State University) and the Global Land Cover Facility (University of Maryland), which were developed as Earth Science Information Partnerships (ESIP), have developed large archives with online inventory-level search engines. In addition, a great number of individual scientists hold between one and ten satellite scenes, yet their projects lack the time and resources to place these holdings online and provide for discovery, search, and download.
