Welcome to the SAXTA Project
SAXTA is a new, open network dedicated to the sharing of high-resolution (~30m) Earth observation data sets such as Landsat and ASTER data. If you are a researcher, developer of Earth science applications, or educator, you may use the network to freely obtain these data sets and to share your holdings with others within the network. This website contains all the information necessary to understand the project and to join the network.
The acronym SAXTA is derived from SAtellite
JXTA™.
JXTA™ is an open source Grid and Peer-to-Peer network infrastructure technology sponsored by
Sun Microsystems®. It provides the core technology for satellite data sharing. For details, see the Technology Section.
The mission of the SAXTA development project is to use the Internet to establish a new distributed system for sharing high-resolution (~30m) satellite datasets, such as Landsat and ASTER data. The objective is to dramatically improve access to, and distribution of, high-resolution satellite data sets for the science, applied science, and education communities. By breaking existing data access barriers, SAXTA is expected to greatly broaden the usage of these data sets for the benefits of the greater Earth science community and for society.
